Formerly First Baptist Church, now replanted as Calvary Church, this is a warm, welcoming group of people seeking to grow genuine community both inside and outside their building's walls by making Jesus non-ignorable in La Junta and to the ends of the earth. Music is mostly led by acoustic guitar, an even blend of hymns and theologically sound worship songs, with regular additions from the pipe organ. Preaching is clear, expository teaching straight from scripture with an eye on practical application. Communion is shared every week. Lifelong believers to those just beginning to ask questions about God and the Christian faith are equally welcome and valued. Nursery care for kids 5 and under available every week, all childcare workers background checked. Regular service each Sunday at 10:45am, community group each Wednesday from 6-8pm for potluck dinner, fellowship, and discussion of previous Sunday's sermon scripture. A welcoming bunch of people! If you've been to Church before (or even if you haven't, I suppose) and you're a bit burnt out on authenticity or the lack thereof, this is a good place to be. Why? Well - it's authentic. What I mean by that is that it's a good place to re-frame your mindset and focus on God, because the people are honest enough to tell you that they're not the reason you should be there. They're a bit, well ... normal. Off. Perhaps just people, after all. But they're not playing, or even baiting you into coming by putting off this aura of normality. It's just life together, which makes it great.
There's a nice coffee & tea bar, too. Self serve!
So if you're hurt, lost, or just got told to go to Church this Sunday 'cause you haven't been in a while. Shoot, maybe it's a holiday and you feel obligated! Maybe your homeless, or confused about who you are. Maybe you're perfectly secure, actually, and you're just wanting to worship. Either way, whomever and whatever you are, you'll be welcome at Calvary, I'm pretty sure. I was. So don't be afraid to not be afraid of people anymore, and stop letting them get between you & God.
